NEW HOPE FOR YOU – HELP IS HERE

Back in 1965 there was an English rock band that wrote the following lines to a number one song: “Help! I need somebody, help! Not just anybody, Help!” That band was The Beatles, and they would become to many, the best rock band of all time. Let’s take a closer look at the lyrics of their song “Help”: “When I was younger so much younger than today, I never needed anybody’s help in any way. But now these days are gone and I’m not so self-assured. Now I find I’ve changed my mind, I’ve opened up the doors. Help me if you can, I’m feeling down and I do appreciate you being ’round. Help me get my feet back on the ground. Won’t you please, please help me? And now my life has changed in oh so many ways. My independence seems to vanish in the haze. But every now and then I feel so insecure. I know that I just need you like I’ve never done before. Help me if you can, I’m feeling down. And I do appreciate you being ’round. Help me get my feet back on the ground. Won’t you please, please help me?”

John Lennon of The Beatles said this about the song, “The whole Beatles thing was just beyond comprehension. I was subconsciously crying out for help”. Folks are crying out for help all over the world. Sometimes those cries are silent and sometimes they are sung for all to hear.

Like the song says, “Not just anybody” – we need supernatural help! We need God’s help! One of the names for God is Jehovah Ezer which means “The Lord is my help”. The English word help means to aid, to lend strength, to lend means of deliverance (as to help one in distress), to give assistance to cause to stand or support and to carry the weight of.” Help means to do for someone what he or she cannot do for himself or herself.

A Psalm that many people turn to for help is Psalm 121. The first two verses say “I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” What direction do you look for help? We need God’s help because we cannot make it on our own! Jesus said, “Without Me you cannot do nothing.”(John 15:5) Our most reliable help comes from God. He’s the most reliable because He is the most available. Psalms 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble”.

We all have very basic needs in our life – food, water, shelter and clothing come to my mind. However, our needs go beyond material things. I believe we all need true friends and family so that you can experience the various highs and lows of life together. We need to experience and share what the Bible calls the fruit of the Spirit – “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control”. (Galatians 5:22) I believe that our greatest need is to be loved and to love God and others.

When I look in God’s Word and I look at our world I come to the realization that people need help and that help comes from having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. People need the Lord and people need help. Don’t hesitate to cry out to Jesus today. Always remember the Bible says, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) He is more than able and willing to take care of all your needs! Help is here!
