In one of my earlier columns I wrote about the gut microbiome. Let’s revisit. The gut microbiome influences the immune system which affects brain function by communicating through the Enteric Nervous System (ENS) often referred to as the second brain, or the Gut-Brain Axis.

So, lets connect the dots. I believe that the most important element of your existence is what foods you consume and it’s origins. As a food scientist, my research is based on daily nutritional needs and sanitary food handling.

The ENS is a vast network of nerve cells embedded in the walls of the gastrointestinal track and controls digestion and communicates directly with the brain. The VAGUS NERVE is a major nerve that transmits signals between the brain and gut. It plays a central role in regulating mood, digestion and the immune system. The GUT MICROBIOME consist of trillions of bacteria that produce neurotransmitters such as serotonin and other molecules that influences brain function, mood and behavior. They communicate through neural signals, chemical signals and immune pathways.

So, because of the importance of the Gut-Brain connection the “Food as Medicine” movement in my opinion gained more momentum. Food is necessary to provide nutrients to every cell in the body..Up to 80% of chronic disease is linked to diet. That suggest that diet is important for disease and prevention, mental health benefits , gut health and immunity, recovery and rehabilitation.

“Food as Medicine” is a critical component when looking at the gut microbiome/brain axis. The domestic food situation requires a great deal of scrutiny because of policies like, the removal of the “Country of Origin Labeling” no longer required on red meat primal cuts, more foods being imported from unfriendly countries than are produced domestically. Or, because there are some political ramifications (rescinding COOL, and tariff policy) , that influences your choices.
I suggest that you research patronizing your local farmers and farmers markets until the current political climate is fleshed out..

Your food decisions will impact your quality of life because Food Is Medicine.
